The Pharaoh's Hound
The Pharaoh's Hound originated in Malta. This breed developed after the arrival of its ancestors around 1000 BC. It was bred in Sicily and was introduced to England around the beginning of the 20th century. It was in 1963 that the breed was officially recognized.
The Greyhound is a short-haired, shiny dog that can range in color from reddish-brown to dark reddish-brown, with white markings on the tip of the tail, chest, and toes (sometimes even down the center line of the face).
The Pharaoh Hound is defined as intelligent, lively and remarkably vigilant. When hunting, it is enthusiastic, determined and attentive. It is an excellent hunter because it uses its sensory abilities to locate prey and it takes advantage of its fine nose and keen eyesight.
This animal is very attached to its master and its family, which makes it affectionate and always ready to play. It requires firm education, but without power struggles. The expression "an iron fist in a velvet glove" is very representative here.
Living conditions
Cleanliness and discretion, because it generally barks very little, make the pharaoh hound an animal that can easily adapt to city life, as long as its need for daily activities is sufficiently met. Let's be honest, however, it remains that it will always be happier in a house with land, than in an apartment.
In fact, this dog enjoys almost perfect health and does not really have a predisposition to any particular disease. However, you should be aware that its short hair makes it more sensitive to cold and bad weather, so it is important to carefully assess its outings.
The Pharaoh Hound has a life expectancy of 11 to 14 years and can weigh up to 20 kg for a male and up to around 18 kg for a female.
Care
It is easy to maintain, but must receive daily care to keep its coat shiny. It is therefore recommended to brush it every day and to have it groomed every two or three months.
As this is a very active dog, long and frequent walks are appropriate, even necessary. Boredom is a real torture for this sportsman who loves to play and express his hunting instincts.
