The Shar-Pei

The Shar-Pei is a very old breed of dog that is said to have originated in the coastal regions of southern China. It is said to have originated in the province of Guangdong, whose capital is Canton. It is particularly widespread in the city of Dah Let, in this same province.
This breed is said to be over 2000 years old. In fact, ancient statuettes from the Han period (around 200 BC to 200 AD) representing this dog have been found in excavations. Shar-Pei means "sand skin" in Chinese, which corresponds perfectly to the texture of its hard and dry coat.
The Shar-Pei is a medium-sized dog, 44 to 51 cm at the withers. It has a short but compact silhouette. Its head with a fleshy muzzle is wrinkled with deep-set eyes and small ears carried high and applied against the skull. Its body, also wrinkled, dips slightly forward. Its colors are black, brown, tan, beige and cream.
He is extremely gentle and sociable with people, especially with children. Which quickly makes us forget that he is an excellent guard dog. However, he has average intelligence. He ardently defends his surroundings, whether it is the house, the car or his master. Very sociable with other breeds of dog as well as with cats, he likes company and is not solitary. He has a very developed sense of ownership.
This breed of dog has a moderate need for exercise. He does not like the rain to the point of preferring to do his business very quickly instead of staying to wander and explore the place where he is. On the other hand, he appreciates walks, when they are done with those he loves.
The Shar-Pei is a dog that lets itself waste away if its owner abandons or neglects it. Very sensitive to reprimands, it can sulk for a long time before finding its joy again.
Very reserved towards strangers, he rarely lets himself be petted during a first meeting.
Their life expectancy is generally between 11 and 13 years.
